The internet, the web and the electronic commerce

Internet vs Web

Internet

The Internet is a massive network of networks, a networking infrastructure. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet. Information that travels over the Internet does so via a variety of languages known as protocols.

Web

The World Wide Web, or simply Web, is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet. It is an information-sharing model that is built on top of the Internet. The Web uses the HTTP protocol, only one of the languages spoken over the Internet, to transmit data. Web services, which use HTTP to allow applications to communicate in order to exchange business logic, use the the Web to share information. The Web also utilizes browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, to access Web documents called Web pages that are linked to each other via hyperlinks. Web documents also contain graphics, sounds, text and video.

History…..
  • Internet was launched in 1969 when the United States funded a project that developed a national computer network called Advanced Research Project Agency Network (ARPANET).
  • The Web was introduced in 1991 at the Center for European Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland.
  • From this early research beginnings, the Internet and the Web have evolved into one of the most powerful tools of the 21st century.
The internet connects millions of computers and resources throughout the world.
The Web is a multimedia interface to the resources available to the Internet.
Everyday over a billion users from nearly every country in the world use the Internet and the Web.

The most common uses are :

  • Communicating ; exchange email, join discussions and debates on a wide variety of special-interest topics.
  • Shopping ; one of the fastest-growing Internet applications. Look for shopping, bargains and make-up purchases.
  • Searching ; access some of the world’s largest libraries directly from your home computer.
  • Entertainment ; find music, movies, magazines, and computer games. Find live concerts, book clubs, and more.
  • Education or e-learning ; can take classes on almost any subject.

  • Providers
-the most way to access the Internet is thought an Internet service provider (ISP) and the most widely used commercial Internet provider are national and wireless provider

National service provider
by using this user can access through the Internet from anywhere within the country for a standard fee without incurring long-distance  telephone charges

wireless service provider
It offer Internet connections for computer with wireless modem and wide array of wireless device.

  • Browser
Are the program that provide access to web resources.this  software connect you to remote computer, opens and transfer files, display text and image, and provide in one tools an uncomplicated interface to the internet and Web documents. It also allows you to explore,or to surf, the web by easily moving from one to another.

for browser to connect to resources, the location or address of the resources must be specified, called uniform resource locators (URLs)

                                  http://www.fsm.com

http: protocol
fsm.com: domain name
com: top-level domain

Communication.

·         E-mail
·         Instant messaging
·         Social networking
·         Blogs, microblogs, and wikis

E-mail
E-mail (electronic mail) is the transmission of electronic messages.
Basic elements of E-mail :
·         Header, including
o   Addresses
o   subject
o   attachments
·         message
·         signature
Spam is unwanted and unsolicited e-mail that may include a computer virus.
Spam blockers are program that identify and eliminate spam.

Instant messaging

Instant messaging (IM) supports live communication with friends.
Universal instant messengers support communication with other services.

Social networking
Social networks connect individuals to one another
Three types of social networking
o   Reuniting sites connect people who have lost touch with one another
o   Friend-of-a-friend sites bring together two people who share a common friend.
o   Common interests or hobbies

facebook

search tools

v AOL Search : search.aol.com
v MSN Search : search.msn.com

Search engines
Locate information on the web. Two approaches are keyword search; ( enter keyword, and it returns a list of hits; good for locating specific information) and directory search ( select from a list of topics; good for locating general information).

Metasearch engines
Submit to several search engines simultaneously. Duplicates sites are eliminated, hits are ordered, and composite hits are presented.

Specialized search engines
Focus on subject-specific web sites.

Content evaluation
Consider the following criteria to evaluate the accuracy of information on the web : authority, accuracy, objectivity, and currency.

web utilities

Utilities are programs that make computing easier. Web utilities are specialized utility programs that make using Internet services for connecting and sharing resources over the Internet. File transfer utilities allow you to copy files to and from your computer across the Internet.

Web-based applications
The most widely used web-based applications are free using Web-based services that provide access to programs that run within your browser window.
For example, Google Apps provides free access to programs with capabilities similar to Microsoft’s Word, excel, and PowerPoint.
Another type is application service provider (asp), to use these, you connect to the Web site of an application service provider (asp), copy the application program to your computer system’s memory, and then run the application.

Plug-ins
Are programs that are automatically started and operate as a part of your browser.
There are many Web sites require you to have 1 or more plug-ins to fully experience their content.

Some widely used plug-ins include :::

  • ACROBAT READER from ADOBE
For viewing and printing a variety of standard forms and other documents saved in a special format called PDF.
  • WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER from MICROSOFT
For playing audio files, video files, and much more.
  • QuickTime from APPLE
For playing audio and video files.
  • RealPlayer from RealNetworks
for playing audio and video files.

  • Shockwave from Adobe
For playing Web-based games and viewing concerts and dynamic animations

FILTERS
block access to selected sites. The Internet is an interesting and multifaceted arena. Parents in particular, are concerned about children roaming unrestricted across the Internet.

Filter programs allow parents as well as organizations to block out selected sites and set time limits. Additionally, these programs can monitor use and generate reports detailing the total time spent on the Internet and the time spent at individual Web sites, chat groups, and newsgroup.

FILE TRANSFER UTILITIES
Using these utility software, u can copy files to your computer from specially configured servers. This is called downloading. U can also use file transfer utility software to copy files from your computer to another computer on the Internet. This is called uploading.
3 popular types of files transfer are FTP, Web-based and BitTorrent.

1)  File transfer protocol (FTP) and secure file transfer protocol (SFTP)
Allow u to efficiently copy files to and from your computer across the Internet.
Frequently used for uploading changes to a Web site hosted by an Internet service provider.

2)  Web-based file transfer service
Make use of a Web browser to upload and download files.
This eliminates the need for any custom software to be installed.

3)  BitTorrent
Distributes file transfer across many different computers for more efficient downloads unlike other transfer technologies where a file is copied from one computer on the Internet to another.
A single file might be located on dozens of individual computers. When u download the file, each computer sends u a tiny piece of the larger file, making BitTorrent well-suited for transferring very large files.
Unfortunately, BitTorrent technology often has been used for distributing unauthorized copies of copyright music and video.

internet security
An Internet security suite is a collection of utility programs designed to maintain your security and privacy while you are on the Web.

These programs control spam, protect against computer viruses, provide filters and much more.

Two of the best-known Internet security suites are McAfee’s Internet Security and Symantec’s Norton Internet Security….

Information Technology Career Overview:

A background in computer science, including facility in writing and interpreting programming code, is almost always the fundamental requirement for this field. As computer technology both becomes more pervasive in Financial Services and changes rapidly, skilled IT professionals are increasingly more valuable.
According to an article in the 12/5/09 issue of
The Economist ("Silo but deadly"), the financial services industry was on track to spend over $500 billion worldwide on information technology in 2009. This is greater than any other industry, and also exceeds the aggregate spending by all governments on IT.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, THE INTERNET, AND YOU

Do you KNOW???

Just a few years ago, the computer was a device you might have used seated at a desk for work or school. Today computers go with us, connecting us to a world of information, our friends, and even our work. The speed of technological developments makes it easy to imagine a world where we are always connected to the internet. Some experts predict the Web will become seamlessly integrated into our lives. Connectivity will mean connections to our documents data, our friends and family, and facts and figures gathered the world over. Imagine a world where the mobile device in your hand is like an expert personal assistant with access to all of these resources. Your calendar might remind you of a friend’s birthday, provide suggestions for a gift, and provide a map to store where you might want to shop on your way home from work.

HOW TO BECOME COMPETENT WITH COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY???

Computer competency refers to acquiring computer-related skills-indispensible tools for today, which include how to effectively use popular application packages and the Internet.
To be competent with computer technology, you need to know the five parts of an information system. Also, you need to understand connectivity, the wireless revolution, the Internet and Web and to recognize the role of information technology in your personal and professional life.

What is IT??
Information technology:
  • Ø  People
  • Ø  Procedures
  • Ø  Software
  • Ø  Hardware
  • Ø  Data
PEOPLE are an essentials part of system. The purpose of information system is to make people, or end users like you, more productive.

PROCEDURES are rules or guidelines to follow when using software, hard ware, and data. They are typically documented in manuals written by computer professionals.

SOFTWARE (programs) provides step-by step instructions to control the computer to convert data into information.
HARDWARE consists of the physical equipment. It is controlled by software and processes data to create information.

DATA consists of unprocessed facts including text, numbers, images, and sound. Information is data that has been processed by the computer.
Connectivity is an additional part to today’s information systems. It allows computers to connect and share information. To be computer competent, end users need to understand information technology (IT).

WHAT IS DATA?

Data is raw,unprocessed facts,including text,numbers,images and sounds.

Four common types of data

Document files
Worksheet files
Database files
Presentation files

Document files
  • created by word processors to save the document

Worksheet files
  • created by electronic spreadsheets to analyze things like budget.
Database files
  • created by database management programs to contain highly structured and organized data.
Presentation files
  • created by presentation graphics programmes to save presentation materials like Microsoft Power Point.

CONNECTIVITY,THE WIRELESS REVOLUTION AND THE INTERNET

What is connectivity??Connectivity is the capability of your microcomputer to share the information with other computers.Meanwhile wireless revolution, a revolution that is expected to dramatically affect the way we communicate and use computer technology.

wireless communication devices

Network is the central concept of connectivity.Network is a communication system connecting two or more computers. Internet is  the largest network in the world.
Its like giant highway that connects you to millions of other people and organizations located throughout the world. The web provides a multimedia interface to the numerous resources available on the internet.

HARDWARE

Computers are electronic devices that can follow instructions to accept input, process that input, and produce information.

Types of Computers
There are 4 types of computers : supercomputers, mainframe computers, minicomputers and microcomputers.

SUPERCOMPUTERS
are the most powerful type of computer.
These machines are special high-capacity computers used by very large organizations.
IBM's Blue Gene is one of the fastest computers in the world.

MAINFRAME COMPUTERS
occupy specially wired, air-conditioned rooms.
Although not nearly as powerful as supercomputers, mainframe computers are capable of great processing speeds and data storage.

MINICOMPUTERS
also known as midrange computers,
are refrigerator-sized machines.
Medium-sized companies or departments of large companies typically use them for specific purpose.

MICROCOMPUTERS
are the least powerful,
yet the most widely used and fastest-growing type of computer.

We focuses principally on microcomputers. There are 6 types of microcomputers :

  • Desktop computers
  • Media centers
  • Notebook computers
  • Netbooks
  • Tablet PC
  • Handheld computers
  • Personal digital assistants ( PDAs ) & smartphones

now, come look into the mict\rocomputers hardware. This physical equipment falls into four basic categories : system unit, input/output, secondary storage and communication.

System unit ::: The system unit is a container that houses most of the electronic components that make up a computer system. Two important components of the system unit are microprocessor and memory. The microprocessor controls and manipulates data to produce information. Memory is a holding area for data, instructions and information. One type, random-access memory (RAM) holds the program and data that is currently being processed. This type of memory is sometimes referred to as temporary storage because its contents will typically be lost if the electrical power to the computer is disrupted.

Input/output ::: Input devices translate data and programs that humans can understand into a form that the computer can process. The most common input devices are the keyboard and the mouse. Output devices translate the processed information  from the computer into a form that humans can understand. The most common output devices are monitors and printers. Can u list others?????????

Secondary storage ::: Unlike memory, secondary storage holds data and programs even after electrical power to the computer system has been turned off. The most important kinds of secondary storage media are hard disks, solid-state storage (solid-state drive , flash memory cards and USB drives ) and optical disks ( CD, DVD and hi def ).

Communication devices ::: a microcomputer can communicate with other computers systems located as near as the next office or as far away as halfway around the world using the Internet. Modems modify output for transmission across standard telephone lines.
